How Do You Get The Winter Fuel Allowance?

You are eligible for the winter fuel allowance if you were born before 5th July, 1950 but there are a couple of exceptions you should be aware of.

- You must be normally present in the UK.

- You must not be in jail.

- You cannot be subject to immigration control.

- You must not have been in hospital for more than 52 weeks getting free treatment recently.

- You must not be living in a care home.

If you were in receipt of the winter fuel allowance for the previous year or if you are getting a state pension then it is likely that you will receive it again automatically. You can contact the government department in charge of processing the winter fuel allowance if you do not automatically receive it. If you miss out on claiming in time for the winter, you can still apply for your winter fuel allowance up until March of the following year. The amount paid will be from £125 to £250 but will depend on your individual circumstances.

The winter fuel allowance will be a big help towards the cost of your winter heating oil bill, although it won’t cover the full amount. You should make sure that you are receiving this payment especially if you are entitled to it. In this day and age, we should not be seeing people struggling to keep warm so we should make sure that we do all we can to prevent it from happening. A lot of elderly people find it hard to cope during the winter but they should not have to be worrying about how they are going to pay for the fuel they need to stay warm.
